MHA-USAID-UNDP Partnership Project on Developing Resilient Cities through Risk Reduction in the context of Disaster and Climate Change
The MHA-USAID-UNDP Partnership Project on Developing Resilient Cities through Risk Reduction in the context of Disaster and Climate Change is being implemented in six cities across India including Shillong. This time bound project (2016 -2020) is being implemented by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, Shillong and monitored by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), Meghalaya. The overall goal of this project is to reduce the natural disaster vulnerability of urban population, infrastructure, lifeline and shelter facilities through risk sensitive planning.The specific objectives of the project are (i) to reduce the disaster risks in urban areas by integrating CCA (Climate Change Adaptation) and DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) in development programmes and undertaking mitigation activities based on scientific risk assessment as well as (ii) enhancing capacities of local governments and urban communities including private sector stakeholders to manage disaster and climate risks. The expected outcome of the project would be (i) risk sensitive city disaster management plan (ii) strengthened early warning system (iii) enhanced capacities of local governments and communities to respond to disasters and mitigate risks (iv) strengthened knowledge base of urban managers and other stakeholders (iv) enhanced private sector investment for risk reduction in innovative pilots.
